This paper compares the size, -10 dB impedance bandwidth, gain and radiation patterns of two antennas designed using metamaterials. The first antenna comprises a 2 × 2 array of spiral resonators aperture coupled to a microstrip line and the second antenna uses a 2 × 2 array Electromagnetic Band Gap, structures also aperture coupled to microstrip line. The simulated performance of the antennas is validated against a typical aperture coupled patch antenna. All three antennas are designed resonate at the 2.45 GHz ISM frequency.
