Portable Electrical Capacitance Tomography Device for Teaching and Learning of Engineering Instrumentation in Electrical Engineering Laboratory

Engineering Instrumentation is one of the important subjects in Electrical Engineering. In learning the topic of Process Tomography, heavy and expensive instrument is needed to measure and visualise liquid flow, especially the composition of materials within a pipeline while the materials are flowing. Often lecturers can only show a cross-sectional photo of the final image of the composition which may create misconception among the students. Therefore, a lab-scaled portable Electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) device is developed to allow measurement of the flow composition carried out by students in a laboratory. This device is capable in providing real time images of the flow composition of oil, gas and water to enhance the understanding of flow measurement. In this study, the device was tested among a group of electrical engineering students. The result shows that students exhibit better understanding in the construction and operation of the system.
