Considering the significance of load sensitive, delay tolerant and reliable data gathering in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), in this paper a handoff optimization and dynamic link quality estimation based forwarding route selection algorithms have been developed for single mobile sink nodes based data gathering in WSNs. The proposed approach functions in three phase, first node discovery to identify best node to perform route formation, second link quality estimation and best forwarding node selection and prioritization scheduling and third data gathering. To perform handoff optimization different timers, including connectivity timer, network topology aware mobility management timer, handoff and data gathering timer, and node response timer have been applied. In addition, average received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and expected number of transmission (ETX) packets have been used. To ensure load sensitive data gathering, a prioritization scheduling measure has been derived. Implementing best route selection, the data gathering has been done by single mobile sink node. The simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme performs better in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay, control message requirements and computational overheads.
