Machine-to-Machine (M2M) network has become a hot research topic in academia as well as in industry due to its wide range of applications in the Internet-of-Things (IoT). This paper proposes a new clustering mechanism with smart sleep mode to prolong the M2M network lifetime and enhance network connectivity. In order to effectively improve the energy utilisation in each M2M node, sink mobility has been concerned to implicit provide load balancing and reduce the end-to-end delay. The Smart Sleep M2M (SS-M2M) protocol has been simulated using MATLAB and the simulation results showed the enhancements of the proposed approach in terms of network lifetime and packet delivery to the base station, the SS-M2M protocol extends the network lifetime by 78% as compared to three existing algorithms and increases the packets sent to sink nodes by 82%.
