Fuel cell hybrid vehicles (FCHVs) utilize alternative nontoxic hydrogen, which is an environmentally friendly fuel that has the potential to dramatically reduce global dependence on fossil fuels. FCHVs benefit from two energy supply sources. Namely, the proton exchange membrane fuel cells and batteries to supply the power-train demand load. This paper develops an optimized energy management system for FCHVs based on a linear programming technique. This technique will lead to an efficient power splitting between the fuel cell system and the energy storage system to achieve lower hydrogen fuel consumption and operational cost. The proposed method will be tested by using a simulation program of the car on different driving cycles such as the Highway Driving Cycle and the Federal Urban Driving Cycle.
