In order to find a possible approach for the usability of Kinect in the training of “KATA," we have developed a motion analysis system which we have named “OJIGI.” “KATA” refers to the stylized gestures and movements in traditional Japanese martial arts and in artistic performances — an integral part of training and performance. The system estimates the positions of joints in the human body and obtains their 3D coordinated data at fixed intervals. It quantitatively analyzes the data and displays the motion of the joints simultaneously through digitally replicated animation while the user is performing the Japanese style bowing “OJIGI.” The results of this system application have ensured us that a Kinect sensor has a strong potentiality to serve as an effective instrument for “KATA” training.
