The role of semiconductor foundries in advanced integrated circuit product development

This paper describes the role of dedicated semiconductor foundries in today''s integrated circuit (IC) new product development (NPD). Conventionally, the semiconductor foundries provide cost-effective IC manufacturing technology and wafer fabrication services to fabless design companies. However, due to the increasing demands of system-on-chip for internet-centric applications, the fabless companies require complete NPD solutions including design support, technology customization, device models, and packaging. Therefore, the role of today''s foundries has become extremely critical to offer NPD services and end-product solutions for customers. This paper presents the necessary functions and core competencies required for transitioning semiconductor foundries from “pure-play” manufacturing only to complete IC manufacturing solution provider.
