OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF ENVIRONMENTALLY CRITICAL PROCESS ANALYZERS

A key distinction between process control analyzers and environmentally criticalrnanalyzers is that while operation and maintenance of process control analyzers is entirelyrnwithin the discretion of the plant management, specific rules mandate installation, calibration,rnoperation, maintenance, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) and record keepingrnrequirements for environmentally critical analyzers. These rules mandate specific daily,rnquarterly and yearly activities to ensure analyzer data quality and procedural requirements torntake corrective actions when an environmentally critical analyzer is found to be malfunctioning.rnHere, we discuss some of these rules in relation to the technology, operation, andrnmaintenance of two types of environmentally critical process analyzers: CEMS (ContinuousrnEmissions Monitoring Systems) that are used to monitor NOx, SOx and CO emissions fromrnfurnace stacks, and HRVOC GC (Gas Chromatograph) designed to monitor VOC (VolatilernOrganic Compound) emissions from Cooling Water Towers and Flares. Organizationalrncapabilities and analyzer maintenance best practices to maintain high reliability of thesernenvironmentally critical analyzers to ensure compliance with applicable rules will also berndiscussed.
