This paper presents a free boundary propagation method (FBPM) to solve the topology optimization problem with an open design domain (ODD). The FBPM releases the imposed close “domain constraint,” which often is activated in the classical standard topology optimization scheme and generates ideal results. This method solves the ODD topology optimization by transferring the original problem into a sequence of approximation sub-problems that can be solved by classical approaches.
