In the presence of large mesospheric electric fields (1–10 V/m), great perturbations in tropospheric conductivity act to shift the lower edge of the ionosphere upwards (∼4–7 km in the daytime and ∼ 5–8 km at night) for VLF radio waves and downwards for HF radio waves (∼ 6–8 km at 3 MHz).
