With the ongoing convergence of telecommunication networks towards an all IP architecture, service providers are challenged by the need of continuously renewing their offer of value-added multimedia services. In this paper, we propose an abstraction layer to be used in application servers, based on the concepts proposed in the so called Java Call Control (JCC) specifications. It simplifies the creation of multimedia services based on both the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP). In order to show its effectiveness in simplifying service design and implementation, we have implemented a JCC Resource Adaptor for a JAIN Service Logic Execution Environment (JSLEE), using the Mobicents application server, which is the only existing open-source JSLEE implementation. Experimental results, obtained by implementing a complex VoIP service, show both the feasibility and the very good performance of our proposal.
