Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are produced when oxidizing disinfectants, such asrnchlorine, used in the water treatment process react with naturally occurring organic matterrn(NOM). Given that most water treatment systems in the United States use chlorine, DBPrnformation has become a major concern, especially since studies have shown that certain DBPsrncan cause severe adverse health effects. Accordingly, DBP reduction by removal of precursorrnmaterial has been an ongoing area of investigation and many processes such as membranernfiltration, granular activated carbon, and advanced oxidation have been studied. The focus of thisrnresearch was to determine the efficacy of implementing photocatalysis at various points in anrnexisting water treatment system for the removal of DBP precursors.
