Increases in the hub heights and diameters of today’s wind turbine continue to highlight the shortcomings, and potentially large resource assessment inaccuracies, associated with traditional meteorological (met) tower mounted anemometers. Ground-based remote sensing technologies using either sound (SODAR) or light (LIDAR) are able to reliably capture wind data at heights up to 200 meters and may offer significant practical advantages such as ease of installation, service, and relocation. Second Wind’s Triton Sonic Wind Profiler is a remote sensing system using SODAR technology that has quickly established itself as the wind industry’s leading remote sensing system. This presentation summarizes field experience with more than 200 commercial systems deployed since April 2008, including the results of performance validation studies undertaken by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the USA. Details of the initial Triton validation study in China are also presented.
