In view of the engineering geological and hydro-geological characters of the arid and semi-arid loess regions in Gansu Province and adjacent areas, the leakage condition of the constructed tunnel is on-site investigated and the causes of which are analyzed. On the basis of nine tunnels in Tianshui to Chankou Highway, the classification of tunnel outflow types suited this area is proposed by engineering analogism.which is divided into four kinds of leakage, drip, spring and outburst. Based on this, four reasonable structural styles of the waterproof and drainage design and their applicable conditions are proposed. The results have provided an effective guidance for the waterproof and drainage design and construction of the tunnels in Tianshui to chankou Highway and Chankou to Liuzhong River Highway.
