New and emerging lighting technologies, such as LEDsrn(light-emitting diodes), can improve lighting quality whilernreducing maintenance and energy costs. The DefensernCommissary Agency (DeCA), with support from thernDepartment of Energy’s (DOE) Federal EnergyrnManagement Program (FEMP) and the Pacific NorthwestrnNational Laboratory (operated for DOE by BattellernMemorial Institute), demonstrated the use of LED lightingrnin a large freezer storage room and fiber optic lighting in arnseries of vertical reach-in display freezer cases at the FortrnGeorge G. Meade Commissary. The LEDs reducedrnlighting energy use by 85% and reduced maintenancernrequirements. The fiber optic lighting system reducedrnlighting energy use by 56%.
