Fiber reinforced plastics (FRPC) is gaining importance in many fields. Larger and more complexrncomponents are manufactured whereas the requirements for the production process arerncontinuously rising. The thermoplastic tape placement process offers the possibility tornmanufacture components having the required fiber direction and position without use of anrnautoclave. Over recent years the Institut fuer Verbundwerkstoffe (IVW) has developed anrnautomated tape placement process, allowing part manufacturing by in-situ consolidation. Byrndetermining the resulting component quality, effects have been identified to obtain a betterrnprocess understanding. Beside these process parameters, the tape quality has been found to bernhighly important.rnThe paper briefly describes the thermoplastic tape placement technology developed at the Institutrnfuer Verbundwerkstoffe. The main focus of the presentation will be a detailed investigation ofrnthe tape quality effects, e.g. accuracy of tape width and thickness, on resulting part properties.
