Alkyd resin with the controlled acid value was prepared by linseed oil, trimethylolpropane (TMP), trimellitic anhydride (TMA) and isophthalic acid (IPA). The self-emulsion with the diameter below 100 nm was gotten when the alkyd resin was directly self-emulsified in water. Emulsion properties involving the storage stability, viscosity, emulsion diameters and Zeta potential were studied by changing the processing conditions. Experiments showed that the acid value was the most important factor to affect the emulsion properties, and only those alkyd resins with the acid value larger than 40 mg KOH/g could be well self-emulsified in the water. Level of neutralization and emulsified temperature also had big effects on the emulsion properties. However, stirrer rotating speed and emulsion concentration had little effects on the emulsion properties.Experiments also showed that the film made by the self-emulsion had very good film properties.
