Coupling beams between openings of coupled shear walls are the first defense against earthquake loading, whose earthquake-resistant performance is the key to the whole structure. In view of the seismic coupling beam with small span-to-depth ratio with good ductility ahd energy dissipation hasn't been discovered so far. A new reinforcement scheme coupling beam in which the stirrup is divided into three rings along the depth of coupling beam is put out by the author. Tentative test for three short coupling beams specimen has been carded out. Some factors such as the ratio of nominal shear stress to concrete compressive strength, the ratio of shear to shear resistance and stirrup index have been studied, which has effect on ductility, energy dissipation and failure mode. It has been proved that the earthquake-resistant performance of the new reinforcement scheme coupling beam is superior to the current reinforcement scheme coupling beam and construction of the former is easy. The new reinforcement scheme coupling beam is an available way to solve the problem.
