A sensor network is composed of low-cost, low-power nodesrndensely deployable over a (possibly in-hospitable) territory in orderrnto monitor the state of the environment, e.g., temperature, sound,rnradiation and so forth. Sensors have the ability to self-organize inrnan interconnected network so as to cooperatively collect, aggregaternand disseminate information to end users. Major challenges inrndealing with sensor networks are the strong limitations imposed byrnfinite onboard power capacity. This paper proposes two protocolsrnfor topology control, i.e. finding a minimal configuration of activernsensors that properly covers the target area while ensuring anrnadequate power conservation schema. In both protocols the overallrnobjective is achieved as an emerging property. An agent-basedrnsimulation model, enabling efficient simulation of large sensorrnnetworks, is exploited for the evaluation of the protocols.
