Under today's market conditions, paper makers continuously have to keep up with innovations in product,rnprocess and asset management technology to improve the productivity of their existing production environment.rnAlthough the concrete productivity initiatives follow heterogeneous patterns at the various paper producers, therernis one – somewhat hidden – common element in the paper maker's value chain, which has a remarkable impactrnon the above mentioned purposes: surface quality. Turning web quality data into surface quality data that arerntargeted towards comprehensive production optimization, requires treating them in an appropriate manner. Andrnthis manner is called classification. Classification is software algorithms that work like the paper makers: sortingrndefects by their appearance and judging this appearance by help of their experience. State-of-the-artrnclassification technology makes web inspection systems work like paper makers are use to work.rnThe purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how this new technological approach can contribute to paper makers'rnproductivity. This is outlined with examples stemming from paper manufacturers applying modern classificationrntechnology. Based on those examples, the authors develop conclusions about how further technologyrnenhancements can continue to support paper makers in matching their current challenges with respect tornproductivity improvements.
