It was in the late ‘60s that Mead Paper decidedrnto add the No. 3 Paper Machine and Off Machine Coaterrn(OMC) to its mill in Escanaba. Beloit Corporationrndesigned and built the machines using a lineshaft with arndifferential mechanical drive system with analog DCrnhelper drives. The Paper Machine's lineshaft is drivenrnwith a classic steam turbine. The Off Machine Coater'srnlineshaft prime mover is two “in-line” dc motors andrnrespective drives.rnThe Drive Systems have been up-graded several timesrnover the years, but this paper is about the February 2002,rnOMC mechanical rebuild that replaced the PIV's on eachrnof the machines five lineshaft differentials.rnThe result of replacing the weakest link (the PIV) of thernmechanical drive with a small horsepower AC motor /rndrive has increased the speed and control capability of thernOff Machine Coater, much to the delight of operators.
