Cross Directional caliper variation, expressed by the 2-σ (2-Sigma) value is among the most critical of qualityrnmeasurements for paper and board grades. Excessive variation in caliper profile not only results in visualrninconsistencies, but more importantly in uneven paper draws throughout the papermaking and converting process.rnThese and other factors can result in poor roll structure which could have an array of negative consequences inrnsubsequent paper processing and cause runnability issues with the paper roll.rnClose monitoring and correction of excessive CD-caliper deviations are customarily done in the forming section orrnduring the calendering process.rnThis paper covers the recent advancement of the most effective CD-profiling method at the calender by means of arnmulti-zone controlled calender roll. These new calender roll advancements include particular design features whichrnadd benefits to the entire papermaking and converting process.
