New High-Performance Completion Packer Selection and Deployment for Holstein andMad Dog Deepwater Gulf of Mexico Projects

The BP Holstein and Mad Dog oilfields in the Gulf of Mexicornare high-profile deepwater projects with high production andrnhigh costs. Wellbore construction for both fields includes arncompletion packer to manage tubing loads and reliably isolaternproduction fluid and pressures from the casing, tiebacks, andrnrisers.rnSeveral drivers influenced the packer selection andrndevelopment process. The magnitude of the packer loadingrnpointed toward high-performance permanent packers. Life-of-wellrnand life-of-field requirements for planned and unplannedrnworkovers pointed toward the operational flexibility ofrnretrievable packers. High rig costs, a desire for acceleratedrnproduction, and difficult wireline access "S" curve wellsrnindicated the value derivable from interventionlessrncompletions. And the high cost of failure pointed toward highrnperformance and quality standards to reduce risk of failure andrnpotential malfunctions. Together, these drivers pointed towardrna new packer solution. Ultimately a high-performance,rnmodular, removeable, "V0 rated," interventionless productionrnpacker was developed which met all of these criteria. Thisrnpaper describes the Holstein and Mad Dog completionrnenvironment, and details the selection, development,rndeployment, and lessons learned with the hydrostatic set,rninterventionless, removeable packer solution.
