As Installation Contractors fight to survive in the risk loadedrnworld of EPCI/EPIC Contracting, many are starting tornquestion which technologies they need to retain in order tornsuccessfully support their core business of Installation andrnSubsea Construction. These technologies are sometimesrnreferred to as 'enabling technologies' and are defined as thosernrequired to execute the Contractors core business, i.e. theyrncannot, or should not be out-sourced. To date, mostrnInstallation Contractors who are active in deepwater locationsrnWorldwide have treated Remote Subsea Intervention as anrnenabling technology. However as Remote Intervention inrndeepwater becomes an established and accepted technology,rnshould it continue to occupy such status within a Contractor'srnorganization?rnThis paper aims to review the development of RemoternSubsea Intervention within Contracting Companies and tornexamine the criticality of this technology to suchrnOrganisations ongoing business. Furthermore, current RemoternSubsea Intervention technology appears to have reached arnposition within the industry where it is considered to bernmature and indeed sufficient for today’s needs. Whilst thisrnperception may be correct, there is surely a danger inrnassuming that what we have is ‘good enough’ and willrncontinue to fulfil the future needs of the industry.rnFinally, against a background of the industries need andrndesire to advance into frontier areas (i.e. ultra deepwater), thernpaper aims to examine alternative approaches to achievingrncost effective, yet reliable and efficient Remote SubsearnIntervention in the future.
