This paper presents the theoretical, experimental, andrnoperational bases of a practical procedure for decomposingrntotal porosity into its basic components, i.e., primary,rnsecondary, fracture, and vug porosities. The procedure makesrnuse of total porosity and formation resistivity factor datarnobtained through geophysical well logs, and is based on arngeneral formulation which has as particular cases all otherrnformulations commonly used to relate formation resistivityrnfactor and porosity, such as Maxwell, Fricke, Archie andrngeneralized Archie equations. To visualize its potential as arntool for interpreting well logs, an application example isrnpresented.
