The U.S. National Oceanic and AtmosphericrnAdministration (NOAA) National EnvironmentalrnSatellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS)rnENVISAT project is focused on developing coastalrnand marine applications of ENVISAT AdvancedrnSynthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) data and thenrndemonstrating these applications in an operationalrnenvironment. Applications include surface winds,rnautomated vessel detection, oil spill and ocean featurerndetection, and river ice monitoring. This projectrnbuilds upon product development accomplished withrnERS-1/2 and RADARSAT-1 data and upon arnsuccessful near-real-time applications demonstrationrnconducted in Alaska since 1999, called the AlaskarnSAR Demonstration (AKDEMO). Products beingrndeveloped primarily use the ASAR Wide Swathrnmode; however, the Alternating Polarization mode isrnalso being tested, particularly for improvement inrnocean feature discrimination. Geographic regionsrnunder study include selected regions of the AtlanticrnOcean, Gulf of Mexico, the Northeast Pacific Oceanrnand the waters around Alaska. This paper coversrnprimarily the applications development effort for thisrnproject.
