A method for assessing the consolidating effect of fines on the structure of paper

A novel method for assessing the influence of pulp fines on sheet structure is presented. It utilizes traditional standard measurements. Experimental data clearly demonstrates that fines do not just fill the voids between the fibers. Instead, especially fi-brillar fines pull fibers into more close contact with each other, thus promoting fiber-fiber bonding. On the other hand, flake-like fines may block fiber-fiber bonding. The results can be exploited in linking pulp properties to paper properties.
