This paper introduces a new sensor technique, which characterizes in-plane stress distributions on coated and uncoated paper surfaces under compression. Contact area and local stress variations are determined using a high-resolution stress-sensitive film, which has recently been developed at STFI. The film covers a load range from 1 MPa to 100 MPa and offers a spatial resolution better than 5 μm. It clearly images fine details such as fibre walls, collapsed lumens and fibre crossings. In first experiments, a measure for the load coverage ability of a coating was obtained. It gives insight into how well a coating layer covers the base paper's non-uniformity under compression. In future, the applicability of the technique will be tested in the fields of coating, calendering and printing.
