In rolling compaction processing, fixed side constraints are used to prevent the powder from escaping from the roll gap. The usage of rolls with side rings that follow the rotation of one of the two rolls has been suggested as an improvement. A three-dimensional finite element model (FEM) is used to simulate the processing of the rolling compaction with and without side rings. Our results show that the presence of a fixed flat side constraint leads to a factional force opposite to the rolling direction, which promotes non-uniformity in the pressure profile and the density of the strip. On the other hand, a side ring that moves with one of the roll induces a frictional force along the rolling direction and helps density the powder.
