We tried to prepare a molecular sieving carbon (MSC) from phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. We synthesized base PF resinsrnwith addition of various catalysts (HCL, NH3, Na2CO3, NaOH and K2CO3) and carbonized resin in N2 flow at temperatures inrna range of 773-1173K. The micropore volume distribution of carbonized PF was determined by a molecular probe method. Arncarbonized PF resin synthesized with NH3 had a more uniform pore size than that synthesized with HCl. The microporernvolume of carbonized PF resins synthesized with Na2CO3, NaOH and K2CO3 were very small. However, after washing in thernhot water, they recovered the micropore volume and showed sharp pore distributions. We also added organic species such asrnethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol during synthesizing their base PF resins. We could increase the pore volume andrnexpand the pore size of the carbonized PF.
