Needle coke activated with K2CO3 showed large capacitance over 20 F/g in organic electrolyte in the two electrode testingrnsystem, although they have much smaller surface areas of around 15 m2/g over those of conventional activated carbons. Suchrnhigh capacitances can be ascribed to the pseudo-capacitance. Gas evolutions at activated coke with K2CO3 and KOH werernanalyzed by in-situ TPD, suggesting more OH groups on the K2CO3-activated coke. The pseudo-capacitance is suggested tornbe induced by the chemical interaction with such OH groups and electrolyte on the surface.
