Chemical activation of anthracites with hydroxides has shown to be interesting to produce activated carbons with a highlyrnmicroporous structure. In a previous paper, attention was put on the reactions occurring during the chemical activation of anrnanthracite by NaOH and KOH. In the present work, the process of chemical activation by hydroxides is again analysed, butrnnow focusing in the behaviour of different coal precursors. This work provides information about the temperatures andrnconditions for the beginning of chemical activation with NaOH and KOH and shows that the reactivity of the solidrn(precursor) is a key parameter in the chemical activation. For the more reactive coals, that is those of lower rank, thernbeginning of chemical activation occurs at lower temperatures than for higher rank coals.
