Spherical resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) aerogel particles were synthesized by emulsion polymerization of resorcinol withrnformaldehyde in a slightly basic aqueous solution and supercritical drying with carbon dioxide. RF carbon aerogel particlesrnwere generated by carbonizing of RF aerogel particles at a high temperature under nitrogen atmosphere. By changing thernviscosity of the RF sol to be supplied to cyclohexane containing a surface-active agent to prepare the spherical RF hydrogels,rnwe investigated the influence of the viscosity of the RF sol on the size of the RF carbon aerogel particles generated. We couldrnsuccessfully prepare the RF carbon aerogel particles with truly spherical shape, and we could control the size of the RFrncarbon aerogel particle by changing the viscosity of the RF sol. The diameter of the prepared RF carbon aerogel particlesrncould be changed from about 10μ m to 500μ m. The BET surface area of the spherical RF carbon aerogel particles with a 20rnμ m diameter was about 800 m2/g, and they had a uniform mesopore radius of about 1.78 nm.
