The softening point of Sasol-Lurgi pitch was increased using vacuum distillation, air blowing and solvent/anti-solvent techniques.rnThe treated pitches were evaluated using known methods like FT-IR, elemental analysis and insoluble material to name a few.rnDue to different mechanisms the air blown pitch showed different C/O ratios than the solvent treated sample. Cross linking of thernaromatic structures during air blowing was evident. Solvent extraction removed aliphatic hydrocarbons and showed an increasernin the intensity of the C-O bands. An increase in aromaticity was obtained during both air blowing and solvent extractionrnmethods with a higher degree of ortho-substitution and aromaticity for the air blown pitch. Comparison of the treated Sasol-Lurgirnpitch with a coke oven pitch showed structural differences that confirmed the unique character of the Sasol-Lurgi pitch.
