Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were treated with elemental sulfur between 250 and 650 ℃ to prepare samples with a wide range of porernsizes, pore volumes, surface areas, and sulfur contents. The equilibrium HgrnHg0 adsorption capacities of the ACF samples were thenrnmeasured in a bench-scale fixed-bed reactor using a simulated coal-combustion flue gas. The ACF sample treated with sulfur at 400℃rnhad largest equilibrium HgrnHg0 adsorption capacities reported in the literature. Sulfur impregnated on the ACF at 400℃ was in bothrnelemental and organic forms. Elemental sulfur was shown to be the main form of sulfur that increased HgrnHg0 adsorption capacity. Thernresults also revealed that both the presence of elemental sulfur on the adsorbent a microporous structure are needed to improve thernperformance of carbonaceous adsorbents for the removal of HgrnHg0 from coal combustion flue gases.
