High-Energy Milling (HEM) is currently a commercial technique whose applications have been primarily in the area of a wide range of metallic alloys. A more recent evolution of the process is the use of a horizontal rotating HEM machine with features that provides several advantages over the conventional milling machines. This type of horizontal rotating HEM machines have been used in the production of nano-structured materials, amorphous materials, oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys, metal-matrix and ceramic-matrix composites, enamel, ductile-metal-flakes, etc. Such specialty materials have already found applications in, or are being investigated as potential materials for applications in several unique areas. Some of the current and potential applications include specialty corrosion resistant bearings, magnetic materials, electrical contact materials, hydrogen storage devices, consumer items, micro-flakes for the specialty paint and solder industry, etc. This paper will review some of the materials produced and their applications using state-of-the-art horizontal HEM machines.
