Advanced Isostatic P/M Processing: Beyond the Fully Dense Billet

Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) is a well established technique for the conversion of metal powders to fully dense solids. While a large fraction of HIP powder metallurgy (P/M) products are simple shapes, e.g., cylindrical or rectangular billets, the HIP process offer considerable advantages in other areas of P/M production. For example, the HIP process can be used to clad a particulate material to a substrate in order to enhance wear or corrosion resistance. Additionally, HIP P/M near net shapes can be produced in order to minimize machining operations and maximize material yields. It should be noted however, that the costs associated with the degree of complexity of a part must be balanced with the value of the finished part. HIP can also be used to form high quality interparticle bonds in porous components such as filters and molding forms. This paper provides insight into these less used HIP applications through the presentation of three case studies, one on containerless cladding, one addressing the HIP of porous stainless steel and Invar alloys and a third describing the compromises made during the design of a Titanium alloy HIP P/M near net shape.
