Practical Applications of ACI 440 and Related Design Guidelines for Externally Bonded FRP Materials

As the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials in our industry increases, so has the need for an accepted design guideline. Recently several new guidelines have become available with the ACI 440, "Guide for the Design and Construction of Externally Bonded FRP Systems for Strengthening Concrete Structures," which is currently in draft form, being one of the more recognized documents. This new guideline can be used in conjunction with other available data to successfully design a variety of FRP strengthening applications. This paper will discuss these applications and provide designers with both an introduction to ACI 440 and a broader understanding of the practical design of various types of FRP applications.
