In this work methods have been presented to compute the primary plus secondary stresses as well as peak stresses caused by a stratified temperature profile produced by mixing of hot and cold fluids. The stratified temperature profile gives rise to a circumferential metal temperature gradient through the pipe. An analytical technique has been outlined to calculate the combined membrane plus bending stress intensities employing the circumferential temperature gradient across the pipe. The purpose of the effort is to address ASME Code compliance, recognizing that the piping code does not specifically address the circumferential temperature variation. The peak stresses due to a stratified temperature profile have been evaluated by employing a finite element procedure.
