In a demonstration project funded by GTI and the U.S. DOE's Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT), a METHANE de-NOX gas reburn system was installed and tested on a natural gas cofired, 76 × 10~6 kcal/h wood waste and sludge-fired stoker boiler at Boise Cascade Corporation's 1360 tonnes per day integrated paper mill in International Falls, Minnesota. System performance was proved during a two-week trial with the boiler on-line in its normal operation load range. Compared to baseline cofirng operations, METHANE de-NOX reduced NO_x emissions by over 40% with 9.5% natural gas injection and by up to 50% with 17% natural gas injection. At the same time, sludge feed was increased up to 3.8 tonnes per hour compared to the baseline level of 1.3 tonnes per hour. Annual savings of $770,000 in sludge disposal and cofirng fuel costs were realized in the first year of operation.
