The BIOTEN process: biomass-fired combustion turbine system commercial demonstration plant overview

BIOTEN has designed, built and is operating a full-scale 5.8 MW commercial demonstration (CDP) of its biomass-fuelled, combustion turbine generation system. This paper will discuss the CDP's primary function of demonstrating the reliability, maintainability, fuel flexibility and efficiency of the BIOTEN Process. The plant will initially be fuelled by fresh cut sawdust from local sawmills, with the generated electricity being sold to the Tennessee Valley Authority. The plant's second function will be certify plant operations on alternative biomass fuels including bagasse, bark, rice hulls and urban tree residue. The CDP's third function is to establish heat rate, emissions level and mean time to failure for critical components. Fourthly, the plantwill function as a qualification and test station for engines to be used in customers' commercial plants and to quality equipment options for alternative system designs. BIOTEN has established joint venture agreements with international EPC firms to provide complete services related to unit construction and operations. These arrangements will enable BIOTEN to domestically deliver a modular turn-key plant which is easily shipped, installed and made operational within ten months from receipt of order.
