Experimentally determined decompression speed data of typical rich gas mixtures at different expansion pressures down to the two phase region of the respective mixture are needed to fine tune current gas decompression models, e.g. GASDECOM, or to develop new ones. An expansion tube test rig has been constructed at TCPL Gas Dynamic Test Facility (GDTF) in Didsbury, Alberta, Canada and has been recently commissioned. The present paper gives some of the fundamental work that led up to the construction of the decompression tube, a description of the facility and some preliminary results. The facility has the following three distinct capabilities: higher initial pressures of up to 22 MPa-a, lower initial temperature down to (-20 °C), and flexibility in testing any rich gas mixtures. A comparison is presented between decompression wave speeds determined by BWRS based GASDECOM model and an AGA-8 based model, for dry and rich/dense gas mixtures.
