Presented within this paper is the rationale and practical approach to establishing an automatic transmission contamination control process. The resulting goal from implementation of such a plan is to achieve a desired transmission oil cleanliness level, and ultimately, a service life of 150,000 miles. A new transmission filter test procedure, the Transmission Filter Effectiveness Method (TFEM~(TM)) has been defined so as to conduct realistic transmission sump filter assessments. Results have been found to duplicate the operation of traditional sump filters in automatic transmissions. The Integrated Filtration System~(TM) or IFS~(TM), approach to implementing both transmission sump and pressure side filtration is introduced. Correct balancing of the particle removal efficiency, pressure drop, and contaminant holding capacity of an IFS~(TM) will result in having a viable "full-life" filter that can last 150,000 miles.
