Electro Energy, Inc. (EEI) is developing high power long life bipolar nickel metal hydride batteries for automotive applications. The EEI concept is to utilize a sealed wafer cell as the building block of the high power and high voltage batteries making the assembly easy and cost effective. Individual sealed cells show excellent rate capability and life. Cells tested under PNGV 100 watt-hour test profile have demonstrated over 50,000 cycles at 8% depth of discharge and over 220,000 cycles at 3%. High power bipolar battery designs are ideal in applications where conventional automotive battery use would require excessive capacity decreasing payload weight and volume. The bipolar nickel metal hydride design allows for high voltage designs with at least 25% reduction in both weight and volume with a cost advantage over conventional designs. Volumetrically the EEI wafer concept competes with the lithium technologies in a packaged battery. Utilizing a sealed wafer cell design Electro Energy has demonstrated 1.2 kW/kg and 1.0 kW/l for a full battery design. In short pulse power applications the power capability of the wafer cell approaches 7 kW/1 for 1 second bursts.
