In this paper we present a Battery Management System (BMS), which supervises the traction battery of the Series Hybrid Drivetrain (SHEDt) in our department at the University of Ulm. The structure contains one master node and several slave nodes. Every slave node controls one part of the battery. The master measures the total voltage and current and receives the values of the single cell voltages and temperatures from the slaves. It calculates the important quantities, controls the cooling system and decides on the operational mode of the battery. Dependent on the battery condition, it reduces the power. All values are transferred via CANbus to a PC for data storage and diagnosis. The results of the data analysis from the PC and from a separate battery model help to verify the BMS and to optimize lifetime and efficiency of the battery. The system can be adapted to different types and sizes of batteries and a compromise between calculation expenditure and exactness can be met with respect to costs.
