For over twenty-five years, hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) simulation has played a vital role in the development and acquisition process of the Stinger missile system. This paper describes the role of a detailed HWIL Simulation in the production process of this air defense missile system, and its hightorical significance in the evolution of the Stinger missile. The HWIL simulation is an important tool used by the missle producer to evaluate the effects of changes in production parameters on system performance. This paper discusses the interaction of the HWIL simulation with all phases of missile production including such items as correlating the simulation to factory test equipment, tolerance studies, parts interchangeability, engineering change proposals, and other areas throughout the life cycle of the missile system. A brief description fothe Stinger missile will be included.
