Flow Visualization of Marangoni Convection in Simulated Weld Pools

摘要

Marangoni convection similar to that in arc weld pools can be revealed clearly by flow visualization using a transparent pool of NaNO3 heated by a defocused laser beam. Furthermore, flow reversal caused by surface-active agents can be visualized by using NaNO3 containing 2 mole% C2H5COOK, and the increased weld penetration can be demonstrated by laser welding.
