Alumax Engineered Metal Processes produces Semi-Soild Forged (SSF) components for a wide ranges of applications and uses, including air conditioning, braking, suspension and electronic components. Weights range from a fraction of a pound to over 20 pounds. Alumax Engineered Metal Processes has been providing SSF products for over 10 years. This paper reviews the history of the SSF process and will examine some of the advantages of the SSF parts and process from the operations and product perspectives. Examples of parts where SSF has been used in high volume production are cited. These examples will review what the product requirements are, how the SSF capabilities met these requirements and what impact the SSF parts had on performance and the finished product cost. This paper will also discuss some of the factors affecting the selection of the heat treat practice, dimensional consistency and surface quality. Mechanical and dynamic properties are also discussed. A review of the new equipment and the products now in production at the new Alumax Engineered Metal Processes, Bentonville, Arkansas facility are included.
