An Improved SoC Controller for Flow Battery Based ESS to Provide Efficient Grid Services

The integration of flow battery in power system network presents an attractive solution due to its numerous technical advantages, including its ability to provide the grid services. One of the important drawbacks of the system is its inefficient operation during the low load condition. At the same time, self-consumed energy needs to be reduced in operation mode. This paper proposed an improved state-of-charge (SoC) controller for flow battery to reduce this self-consumed energy. A system has been simulated to investigate the performance of the proposed SoC controller for grid ancillary services. As an example, the Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) service of the UK grid is considered in this case. The performance has been compared with PI based SoC controller and the result shows the superiority of the proposed controller to provide an efficient grid service.
