Abstract: We have derived the equations to describe the Fresnel diffraction of a grating under short-pulsed light illumination. Because a short-pulsed light contains many frequencies, the Fresnel diffraction of a grating under a short-pulsed light illumination is quite different from that under continuous wave illumination. For example Talbot self image at the Talbot distance may be different from the initial object. The density at the fractional Talbot distance under short-pulsed light illumination may not a constant while the intensity is a constant for the continuous wave. Our analyses are useful for the applications of short-pulsed light.!4
